Welmy 6x6 1953
The tomei Collection
The early Welmy 6x6, also known as the Six ES, was introduced in 1953 by Taisei Koki, a manufacturer of camera components, lenses, and shutters according to Tatsuo Shirai (see References and Acknowledgments). Following the establishment in 1952 of strict industry standards for camera production, a new era of Japanese camera production was launched and the number of cameras sold rose sharply to over 700,000.
The example shown here is from early production and referred to as the model Six E by many including McKeown and is marked by the presence of strap lugs, circular viewfinder ports, and a beveled wind-on knob. It is equipped with the 75mm Welmy Terionar f/3.5 lens and Taisei shutter with 8 speeds from 1 to 1/200 sec plus B.
